Mogao Caves Tickets for Foreigners: A Practical Booking Guide
2026 prices in USD, the 30-day release at 07:00, how the Trip.com voucher exchange actually works at the gate, and what to do when peak-season inventory vanishes.

Mogao Caves is a timed, capacity-controlled visit rather than a simple walk-up monument. For a foreign passport holder the practical route is the Trip.com listing for non-Chinese residents: it is the English-facing entry point and it shows date-specific availability. Choose an available date and keep the booking reference with the passport used for every name. There is no on-site ticket window and no walk-up sales for the standard route, so this is not a step you can leave until arrival.
The Mogao open-management notice states that no third party is authorised to resell tickets. The official channel is the “莫高窟参观预约网” WeChat service account → “Ticket Booking” entry (travel agencies use www.mgk.org.cn), and the hotline 4008-333-715 (08:30–16:30) is advice only — it does not take bookings. In practice most foreign visitors book through Trip.com because it works in English and accepts international cards; just add one step to your plan, described below.
30-second answer
Book the non-Chinese resident product on Trip.com as soon as your date opens — about 30 days ahead at 07:00 China time — and pay within 15 minutes. Class A is US$34 (US$36 with the foreign-language guide); off-season it drops to US$20. Arrive with every passport, exchange the voucher at Building 2 (展馆2) and enter through Building 1 (展馆1). The visit takes 2.5–4 hours.
Mogao Caves ticket prices 2026
Updated:10/22/2026| Ticket | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Class A · peak season (1 Apr – 30 Nov) | US$34 (¥238) | Digital centre, two films, shuttle, about 8 guided caves |
| Class A · foreign visitor | US$36 (¥258) | Class A plus the foreign-language guide service |
| Class A · quiet season (1 Dec – 31 Mar) | US$20 (¥140) | Same inclusions, lower shoulder-season price |
| Class B · reduced visit | US$14 (¥100) | Commonly four caves, without the two films |
| Class C · digital only | US$7 (¥50) | Films only, no caves |
| Special caves (45, 57, 158, 220…) | US$21–28 per cave, up to US$42 | Bought on site, on top of your Class A ticket |
USD figures are converted from the official CNY price at about ¥7.1 = US$1 (October 2026) and are shown for planning only. Verified October 2026; always confirm the figure shown for your date before you pay.
The peak-season Class A figure is not arbitrary: it is 8 caves ¥180 + two digital films ¥48 + shuttle ¥10 = ¥238. Foreign visitors pay ¥238 + foreign-language guide fee ¥20 = ¥258. Knowing the split helps when a reseller quotes you a number that does not match.
Where to book: channels and the voucher-exchange step
Updated:10/22/2026The Mogao open-management notice states that no third party is authorised to resell tickets. If you read Chinese or have someone who can help, the official route for foreign passports is the “莫高窟参观预约网” WeChat service account → “Ticket Booking” entry; travel agencies use www.mgk.org.cn. There is no phone booking.
For most English-speaking travellers, Trip.com (the designated overseas booking platform integrated with Mogao ticketing for foreign visitors) is the workable option and it does work — but it adds one step that catches people out. Third-party vouchers must be exchanged at Building 2 (展馆2) before entering through Building 1 (展馆1). Allow 45 minutes, not 15.
Allow 45 minutes, not 15
The exchange queue at Building 2 can be long and is not first-come-first-served in any obvious way. Carry the physical passport for every traveller, not a photo of it, and do not plan a tight connection behind your session.
A ticket versus B ticket: what you actually receive
The letters describe two different operating products, not two interchangeable prices. Class A is the normal, fuller experience: entry to the digital exhibition centre, two introductory films, the coach transfer across the desert and a guided route through a rotating selection of around eight open caves. The cave numbers are chosen by the attraction on the day, so a ticket cannot guarantee a particular mural or sculpture.
Class B is used when regular capacity is gone or when the attraction releases a reduced emergency allocation. It commonly covers four caves and excludes the two films. The visit is still worthwhile, but travellers who have crossed China for the full context can feel a real difference in pacing and interpretation. Read every inclusion in the Trip.com product card instead of assuming a lower price means a short version of A with the same route.
| Product | Usually includes | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Class A | Digital centre, two films, shuttle, about 8 guided caves — US$34 peak, US$20 off-season | Timed check-in; cave selection rotates |
| Class B / emergency | Reduced visit, commonly four caves and no films — US$14 | May be released only when A inventory is unavailable |
Release timing and the real daily cap
Class A tickets are released about 30 days ahead at 07:00 China time, and Peak-season Class A allocations often go within about 10 minutes of release. You must pay within 15 minutes or the order is released back to the pool. Off-season the window is about 15 days, and Class B about 7–15 days.
- Per person
- 1 ticket per ID per day, maximum 5 tickets per order
- Daily capacity
- 6,000 standard + 12,000 emergency = 18,000 a day
- Walk-up sales
- None. There is no on-site ticket window for the standard route.
- Changes
- Uncollected tickets can be rebooked once free of charge. Refunds carry a fee that rises as the visit date approaches, and no refund is given on the day.
Capacity is split across times, languages and ticket types, which is why a date can look sold out even when a small number of other products remains. Weekend mornings, public holidays and the 1 April – 30 November peak disappear first. Build one flexible day into your itinerary so a 10:00 booking can move to another session without breaking your train connection.
Booking on Trip.com: a foreign visitor checklist
- Open the current listing. Choose the Mogao Caves attraction page and select the product labelled for non-Chinese residents. Compare the A and B inclusions before selecting a date.
- Enter names exactly. Use the romanised name and passport number for each visitor. A mismatch can delay collection or require a correction through the booking channel.
- Pay inside 15 minutes. Have your card ready before the release minute; unpaid orders are released automatically.
- Save the voucher offline. Screenshot the order number, meeting point, date, time and cancellation terms. Mobile data can be slow around the desert visitor centre.
- Exchange at Building 2, enter at Building 1. Follow the location printed for your order, not a map pin copied from an old blog post, and allow 45 minutes for the queue.
- Leave a transfer buffer. Plan at least 30 minutes beyond the stated arrival time for a taxi, queue and document check. The complete visit takes 2.5–4 hours (allow 4 hours if you add a special cave).

At the visitor centre: passport, films and shuttle
Bring the original passport for every person on the reservation. A photo, photocopy or hotel registration cannot replace the document check. Keep everyone together when collecting a voucher because the counter may verify each name before issuing a ticket or directing you to the next queue. Staff may ask you to show the booking reference on your phone, so keep the screenshot legible and the screen brightness high.
The standard A route starts at the Digital Exhibition Centre. The two films (about 40 minutes in total) provide a short history and a digital look at caves that cannot be open every day. After the films, follow the assigned group to the official shuttle; private cars do not replace that transfer. The grotto visit then proceeds with a guide through the caves selected by the conservation and crowd-control team. Expect steps, uneven ground, strong sun outside and cool air in the film theatre.
- Photography
- Photography and video are prohibited inside the caves — not merely restricted.
- Drones & pets
- Drones and pets are not allowed.
- Luggage
- Bags over 20 inches cannot enter; free storage is available at the digital centre and in Building 1.
- Inside the caves
- Caves are unlit. Guides use a torch to light details one point at a time.
- Free extra
- After your visit you can enter the Dunhuang Grottoes Conservation and Research Exhibition Centre free of charge.
- Opening hours
- 1 April – 30 November: 08:00–18:00, last entry 16:10. 1 December – 31 March: 09:00–17:00, last entry 15:10.
- Digital Exhibition Centre
- 敦煌市阳关东路 8899号 (8899 Yangguan East Road, Dunhuang)
- Hotline
- 4008-333-715 (08:30–16:30) — Advice only — the hotline does not take bookings.
Use the time printed in your voucher as the controlling instruction and avoid booking a flight or long-distance train right after the last session. Remember that Dunhuang runs about 101 minutes behind Beijing-time intuition: in midsummer the light holds until roughly 21:10, which gives you far more usable evening than most itineraries assume.
If A is gone: same-day and emergency options
First, check a different session or date on Trip.com. Morning slots are popular, but a later session can work if your transport stays flexible. Next, ask the visitor centre whether a B or emergency allocation is operating. Do this in person with all passports; the staff can explain the day's remaining route and whether films or a language request are possible. Do not pay an unofficial tout who promises a guaranteed cave number or a queue jump.
A reduced ticket is still subject to the same conservation rules. Photography and video are prohibited inside the caves — not merely restricted. Guides may close a room without notice. Set expectations with your travel group before choosing B: it is a way to see part of Mogao when demand is high, not a replacement for the full A route.
Two worthwhile backups
Yulin Caves
Yulin is a separate grotto complex reached on a longer eastern road trip. It rewards visitors who want mural details and a quieter setting, but it needs its own ticket, driver and weather check. Confirm opening status locally before committing a full day.
Western Thousand Buddha Cave
The Western Thousand Buddha Cave is another meaningful alternative when Mogao inventory is exhausted. It is farther from central Dunhuang and has different access rules, so treat it as a planned excursion rather than a last-minute walk-up substitute.
Pair your ticket with an English tour request
The ticket product and the guide language are related but separate decisions. At collection, show the passport and say “English tour, please,” or display “我要英文讲解,谢谢。” (I would like an English explanation, thank you). Foreign-language groups are assembled on site rather than scheduled online: recent traveller reports put English departures at roughly about 10:00 and 14:00–14:30, depending on the day’s bookings. Read the companion Mogao Caves English tour guide before choosing a session, and ask staff to confirm whether the time is for films, the shuttle or the cave group.
A low-stress day plan
Keep the cave visit as the fixed appointment in your Dunhuang itinerary. Eat breakfast before leaving town, arrive early enough for the passport queue and keep water and sun protection in a small bag. After the shuttle returns, take lunch and a rest before visiting Crescent Lake in the cooler evening — from about 19:30 in summer, not 17:00. A 2.5–4 hours Mogao visit plus the return taxi is already a substantial morning; avoid adding Yadan or Yumen Pass to the same day.
For transport connections, leave a generous buffer after the final shuttle. The digital centre is outside central Dunhuang, and a taxi queue can grow when several groups finish together. The three-day Dunhuang itinerary shows how to place Mogao before the dunes and the western route.
Final pre-departure check
- You have confirmed your visa-free eligibility or hold a valid Chinese visa.
- Every passport matches the romanised name and number in the order.
- The Trip.com voucher, meeting point and cancellation terms are saved offline.
- You know the exchange route: Building 2 first, Building 1 to enter.
- Your arrival time leaves at least 45 minutes for the road, exchange queue and document check.
- You know whether the booking is Class A or Class B and what it includes.
- There is a flexible date or a Yulin / Western Thousand Buddha backup if peak inventory vanishes.
- Your onward train or flight is not scheduled immediately after the final cave session.

Mogao Caves standard visit route
A clear visual overview of the structured visit, from the Digital Exhibition Centre to the caves.
Plan the visit in four steps
For an A-category ticket, allow roughly 3.5–4 hours from arrival at the Digital Exhibition Centre to the end of the cave-area visit. The schedule is structured, so arriving early makes the whole experience calmer. The route diagram above is a planning aid; staff may adjust the order or accessible caves on the day.
1. Arrive at the Digital Exhibition Centre
Arrive 30 minutes before the time printed on your ticket. Use this time to collect your ticket and pass security. Ask staff about current luggage-storage arrangements before leaving bags behind. Selfie sticks and drones are not allowed in the cave area.
Two films are normally shown before the shuttle: The Millennium Mogao, a history film, followed by The Splendour of Buddhist Art, a dome-screen presentation. Follow the scheduled screening time and format shown on site. For the dome film, seats around the middle and roughly the third row from the back usually give a balanced view.
2. Take the official shuttle
The ride to the caves takes about 15 minutes. Follow your assigned group to the official shuttle; private cars do not replace this transfer. If seats are available, the right-hand side usually opens onto broad views of Sanwei Mountain and the desert landscape.
3. Follow the guided cliff-cave route
The core visit normally takes about 1.5 hours. Visitors are divided into groups of around 30 and follow a guide along the wooden walkways. An A-category visit generally includes around eight caves. Site staff allocate the route according to opening, conservation and crowd-control arrangements, so no particular set of caves is guaranteed.
Two landmarks help you understand the site, but entrance to these particular caves is not guaranteed:
- Cave 96 and the Nine-Storey Pagoda: home to the 35.5-metre Maitreya statue.
- Caves 16–17 and the Library Cave: the area where more than 50,000 manuscripts and other documents were discovered.
Stay with the guide. Once a group leaves, the caves are locked again, and visitors cannot go back inside independently.
4. Add nearby stops after the tour
When the guided route finishes, leave time for these nearby stops:
- Dunhuang Grottoes Cultural Relics Conservation Exhibition Centre: look for replica-cave and conservation displays. Check opening times and photography rules on site.
- Library Cave Exhibition Hall: reproductions of manuscripts and displays on the discovery and archaeological history of the cave.
- Nine-Storey Pagoda Square and the tree-lined Daquan River path: good places to step back and photograph the cave façade and the wider cliff complex.
What to remember
Stay with your assigned group. Do not join another tour or enter extra caves without explicit staff permission. Book ahead, arrive early and follow the assigned route. The 3.5–4-hour plan is an estimate, not a guaranteed schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign visitor book Mogao Caves tickets online?+
Yes. Trip.com is the English-facing booking entry point for foreign passports and carries the non-Chinese resident product with date-specific availability. Select a date and product, enter each traveller's passport details exactly as shown, and keep the confirmation available offline. The official channel is the “莫高窟参观预约网” WeChat service account → “Ticket Booking”.
How much does a Mogao Caves ticket cost in 2026?+
Class A in peak season (1 April – 30 November) is ¥238, about US$34; foreign visitors pay ¥258, about US$36, which includes the foreign-language guide fee. Off-season (1 December – 31 March) Class A drops to ¥140, about US$20. The reduced Class B ticket is ¥100, about US$14. Special caves cost extra, from US$21 per cave.
What is the difference between an A ticket and a B ticket?+
A is the full standard visit: the digital exhibition centre, two introductory films, the shuttle and a guided visit to about eight caves. B is the emergency or reduced-capacity product that commonly covers four caves and does not include the films. Check the inclusions shown for your date before paying.
When are Mogao Caves tickets released?+
Class A tickets go on sale about 30 days before the visit date, at 07:00 China time, and payment must be completed within 15 minutes or the order is released. Off-season releases are about 15 days ahead and Class B about 7–15 days. Each ID can hold one ticket per day and each order is limited to five tickets.
Do I need my passport at the Mogao ticket centre?+
Bring the original passport for every visitor, including children. Staff use the document to match the reservation and issue or verify entry. A phone screenshot is useful as a backup, but it does not replace the passport check.
What can I do if my preferred date is sold out?+
Check other times and dates on Trip.com first, then ask the visitor centre about an emergency B product on the day. There are no on-site walk-up sales for the standard route, so do not rely on buying at the gate. Yulin Caves and the Western Thousand Buddha Cave offer meaningful alternatives, but they are separate attractions with their own transport and tickets.
